(VIDEO) Replacement of overflow valve in WC cistern

21.07.2017

Toilet tank failures can cause a lot of problems in your home, such as water overflowing and flooding the bathroom floor. In most cases, damage to the overflow valve and fill valve is caused by limescale, so it is recommended to change them as soon as you notice a fault in their operation.

First, let us tell you a bit about toilet tanks.

Toilet tanks are divided into wall-hung, ceramic (on monoblocks) and built in. By the height of mounting, wall-hung toilet tanks are divided into high mounted and low mounted. High-mounted tanks discharge water by pulling the chain, while with low-mounted it is done by a pushing button.  The main reason for this division is that if the high-mounted tank is equipped with a push button, children wouldn’t be able to reach it and flush, and the choice between high or low mounting depends on the height of the angle valve. The ceramic toilet tanks of monoblocks are mounted on the very toilet bowl. The built-in tanks are built into the wall, before tiling, and attached on it is the so called wall-hung toilet bowl.

The interior of the toilet tank consists of an overflow valve and the fill valve. The overflow valve cuts the water inflow from the plumbing to the tank when the tank is filled with a certain quantity of water. After you flush, the water will go through the rinsing tube into the toilet bowl, lowering the water level in the tank, which will result in water flowing in the tank. The fill valve lets the water go out of the tank when you flush, and after the tank is empty, closes the outlet, so that the tank can fill up again.

If you want to change the overflow valve in your toilet tank, first you need to close the water inlet on the tank by turning the angle valve that connects the tank with the plumbing. After this, carefully unscrew the brinox hose. It will be filled with water, so we recommend you keep a washbowl under it. Also, you need to detach the rinsing tube which connects the tank to the toilet bowl. The next step is to unscrew a plastic nut from the connector which attaches the overflow valve to the tank. Finally, install a new overflow valve and reattach the brinox hose and the rinse tube.
